It was in 1894 when a young Ontario resident R.J. Pettapiece settled in Strathcona. On November 8th of that year, he started the South Edmonton News and in conjunction with his newspaper, he opened a job printing department.
On September 1, 1896, he sold his business to J. Hamilton McDonald, who renamed the printing company in honour of his father, the Rev. Alexander "Pioneer" McDonald, who started Strathcona's first Baptist Church.
The Pioneer Press was owned for 67 years by the McDonald family until Cody McDonald sold it March 1, 1963. The company was purchased by employee S.D. (Jim) Edgar, who began working there December 12, 1950, and the late George McEwen.
Since 1963 Jim Edgar has managed the operations of his family-run company. Long term employees, many of whom have contributed at least 25 years of service, have also played a major role in the success of Pioneer Press Ltd. Their experience and commitment plus new key personnel with fresh creativity and forward thinking contribute to the growth of the company.
